The museum grew from the work of the L.D. Institute of Indology, established in 1956 through the joint efforts of Kasturbhai Lalbhai and Jain Acharya Muni Punyavijayji. Punyavijayji donated manuscripts, bronzes and cloth paintings to the institute.
